In the context of Indian modernism, post-colonial artists consciously deliberated their practices by playing with materiality and form ultimately developing powerful art languages that not only declined ambiguity around “Indian-ness” but also deconstructed the artist’s own identity into various personal signifiers. From these veins of history, an interesting idea emerges. As these artists attempted to arrive at an art language that was significant of their times, sometimes while being at odds with each other, they expanded ideological space and supported possibility, eventually creating their own dialects that have since become codified into a source history for generations to come. At the heart of their discourse is the vulnerable human condition, sometimes mythic and personal, sometimes political and nihilistic. In speaking a kind of truth to power, however diversified by group or schools of thought, post-colonial artists were driven by a desire to communicate the cultural authenticity of an emerging nation-state on a global scale.Artists associated with the Bombay Progressives embraced internationalism in their evocation of Indian authenticity – perhaps acknowledging, however conflictingly, centuries of colonial influence, or even so the existence of the changing global world. Motivated by the search for a modernist cohesion in aesthetic sensibility, they strove to develop distinct visual languages as aligned with their training, exposure, interests and above all, personal expression rooted in revolutionary impulse. Others were compelled by a shared urgency even though they defined “progress” differently and proposed an amorphous freedom over formulaic experiments instead.OVR - Out of Print is a virtual exhibition that brings together a series of rare, limited edition prints produced and signed by the Indian modernist painters Jogen Chowdhury, M.F. Husain, Ram Kumar, Krishen Khanna, Gulam Mohammed Sheikh and Benode Behari Mukherjee.
