The art world’s transition to the digital medium in the wake of the pandemic has been surprisingly seamless: Museums have taken exhibitions online, galleries have set up online viewing rooms and banded together to create entirely new platforms such as Art In Touch; fundraisers organised by the likes of Devangana Dash and Fearless Immunity, and initiatives such as Art Chain India have thrown up more options for affordable art.
Art fairs, such as Art Basel, have been hit particularly hard given continuing travel restrictions, but have also discovered a new demographic eager to access art through its online viewing rooms. Which makes sense, given that one now has access to the best art from across the world from blue chip galleries and galleries you’ve never heard of, from the comfort of your couch. And minus the cost of flight tickets, hotels, the fair’s Rs 10k entry fee.
