This is how it works usually. A photographer picks up a subject, sticks to it for some years, then moves on to work on yet another subject which captures his/her fancy. However, Sunil Gupta has remained fiercely loyal to one subject. From the 1980s, when he captured a sort of photo-narrative depicting his partner as hobby, to date when Gupta has dedicated his lens to the issue of gay identity and politics. We ask like so many so often ask him. Is it because he is an insider, a gay himself that nudges him to keep telling their stories?
